Endubsar – A helper to find

Not only had the letters to be carved correctly in reverse, but the imprints would have their letters in relief embossed, their shapes had to be smooth and round so as to hold the longer through the times. The letters should not brake off while the printing tablet was torn off from the fresh sheet of oiled clay placed underneath, that would present the finished product reproduceable at will. A dozens had Endubsar now in his bin and just a simple phrase he had to write on the fascioned printing tablet. « Hence you came to drive now further » he had to write within the 400 characters alphabet frame he had learned so patiently. But the clay was alive and rebelious, Endubsar wanted his work be perfect if he was to be a scribe then only at mastering this art at best. The sun was entering the workshop and all apprentices ran out of the creamy sandstone house of scribes, while Endubsar cried to destroy one more tablet seeing one letter would not appear on the printing test again. He would start anew until he could do it fast enough and beautiful, but then it must be dried and baked before the first printing test would show the end result. His tears helped him to arrive finally at the wanted structure using his tears to keep the clay smooth enough and he could bake his printing tablet ready to the use. Enki the gentle lord in this house of teaching searched now for a helper, in a task he knew was needed to be performed. In this house of scribes in Eridu his heart had driven him and certain was he to recognize the man who would be fit for the precise task. Enki was spying behind the half closed door of the atelier and watched Endubsar thoroughly. Enki needed a scribe and wanted him to be the most precise of them all, even in the printing masters he would see too much pride would swell as on many faces he would see that treat appear now more and more and he could not understand what dimmered now the hearts. He needed some strong heart to do the memory job with him. Endubsar seemed so absorbed in what he was doing, he looked not at his surrounding so concentrated he was on his stilet. feebrishly trying to hold it stable and it looked as if Endubsar was the slowest of all the apprentices as he would never take the pause and worked entire evenings as solitary chap. So much he wanted to be sure to be in merit of his mastery. The young lad actually allready made the most wonderful little printing tools there could be done and was mastering already the scribes arts of letters perfectly, not even knowing it. Nabu was especially regarding with that talented and perseverant boy. It pleased Enki to see such a young chap being so intense at struggling with himself and not playing with his comrades, as most often all youngsters compete to know themselves. Endubsar was of another kind, he battled with himself, he wanted to be worthy of his mastery. Enki felt that this young boy's urge was not to be the best of all, he saw it was not ambition pushing him, that boy wanted to know himself by knowing which skills he could handle best, he wanted to be proud of his doing. And the clay was rebelious in his hands and the stilet would escape his wish and his fingers covered now in sweat and tears. Enki was deeply touched to hear the boy now pray in near despair now to the clay, to help him achieve his work and Endubsar sat there for some minutes in deepest silence. The foreman also noticed the change of air. Enki got deeply touched by this scene, he knew he had found his man. A long work of memory lied now before them and his helper he had found. Endubsar did not notice Enki the Lord of waters he loved so much that Enki knew from heart and knew Endubsar wanted to become a dignified being so as Enki asked the earthlings be. Was he not happy in his familly in his urge to be a perfect tool master as a scribe? Enki found out he was an orphan and that brought him closer even to the Lord called prince of earth, that was the Enki title thrown on him in so lomg past millenias that led as rivers of memories behind them. The deluge had happened some years before and Enki was looking into the last sunshines before the rebellion of the watchers. Enki knew something evil would linger in the air, something bad was coming, the watchers grew rebelious, but how can you arm yourself and meet the needs with something that makes everything to hide in cowardness was Enki's thought. Endubsar was finally placing his little printing tablet into the oven and the other apprentices came back noisy and loughing. Endubsar greated them, but sat back serious to his working table. Another exercise as a marriage invitation he should also perform. That already had been asked of him as a great honour. « To Lord Marduk's wedding in Igigi heroes command and happyness of Sarpanit's great joy to announce and invite you to their happyness, in eternal alliance between anunaki and earthlings, all welcomed on day so and so ». Endubsar wondered how in all skies this honor was thrown on him. It made him now so nervous. Enki understood the intensity the youngster placed in all his steps, his attention focused on the deeds of his hands, would he not be able to an impeccable work he could then as well change apprenticeship the young boy knew. Fiever nearly cought him since the day the task was thrown on him. His first floral decoration to draw into the clay made him now sweat and he forgot even to eat and rest a bit so much the deed seemed of highest importance to the already formed young scribe. Hundreds of such orders arrived weekly at the master's atelier. Nabu was the foreman's name, an old and wise bearded man with high profes-sional consciousness to teach the apprentices, respected by all craftsman's teachers. Not one secret of the clays had not been digested by the old master. Enki greeted him in silence not to awaken Endubsar on his presence and decision yet, he would learn it later, first was Endubsar great task for the invitations to the feasty day approaching, His first son now finally marrying and Enki was pleased some sign of love had emerged from his first born who had grown more taciturn each day. Efforts and most beautiful fruits should be honored now, Endubsar's prayer had shown to Enki's heart he was the correct helper searched in the house of scribes. An eye glance exchanged from behind the door to the corner where Nabu was sitting behind his beard, watching the young Endubsar so absorbed in his honest work. Nabu's manner in his teachings was not to interrupt the apprentices when they struggled with themselves, he knew how part of sufferings are called for to deepen any art and skill. Nabu saw in Endubsar his most ardent student and was thus even stricter with his demands on him. Nabu greated Enki with a silent smile, what was the lord of waters again plotting for a trick he wondered then amused. The sun entered the workroom and shone on the flying dust and Endubsar was studying the floral decorations and shuddered again flooded in tears, shaking now so exhausted he was. Nabu went to the boy and told him now to rest, tomorrow was still a well enough day left.
