Guyana, the Co-Operative Republic of Guyana, formerly British Guyana, is the only Commonwealth state located in South America. In addition, it is also the only state in South America where the official language is English.
Located north of the equator but in the tropics, it has coasts on the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana is surrounded to the southeast by Suriname, to the south and southwest by Brazil and to the northwest by Venezuela. It is in area the antepenultimate country in South America and it is one of the poorest. Guyana is one of the last two countries on the American continent where driving is on the left side, the other being its neighbor, Suriname.
Guyana means “land of abundant water” in the Arawak language. The country is characterized by its vast tropical forests dissected by the numerous rivers, creeks and waterfalls, notably the Kaieteur Falls on the Potaro River. Guyana’s tepuys are famous for inspiring Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1912 novel The Lost World.
