DAY DAWNS AT THE FAERY RING … County Armagh
Ballymacdermot Cairn is an amazingly well-preserved Neolothic burial tomb which lies on the south-eastern slopes of Ballymacdermot Mountain, close to Newry. It was erected circa 3500 BC!
Ballymacdermot (Bhaile Mhic Dhiannada in Irish, which means McDermot’s town land) is a low mountain to the east of Slieve Gullion. Panoramic views over the plain of Meigh, Slieve Gullion and the ring dyke hills to the south can be enjoyed from the site, as well as the Mourne and Cooley mountain ranges
Locally known as ‘The Cashla’, Ballymacdermot Cairn is also spoken of as ‘The Graves’ and ‘The Faery Ring’ and is said to be haunted.
