Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous Central Asian country along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean. The Tian Shan Mountains, which surround the ancient caravan route and dominate the country, are home to snow leopards, lynxes and sheep. In the south, the thousand-year-old town of Osh, once a stopover town on the Silk Road, has an enormous bazaar.
The country is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east and south, Tajikistan to the southwest and Uzbekistan to the west. Covering an area of ​​198,500 km2, the country is completely landlocked and has no access to the sea.
The capital Bishkek is located at an altitude of 800 m, very close to the border with Kazakhstan.
In 2016, the population of Kyrgyzstan was estimated at 5,727,553.
Kyrgyzstan is one of two former Soviet Socialist Republics, along with Kazakhstan, to have retained Russian as an official language.
According to a 2009 census, Kyrgyz ranks first among languages ​​spoken with 71% of native speakers, Uzbek in second position with 15%, despite its status as an official language, Russian only occupies third place with 9% of speakers, the remaining 5% being shared by other languages.

However, according to the same census, the Russian language is mastered by 40% of the population due to the fact that it is still the language of business and politics. There is, however, a trend towards an arrival of the Kyrgyz language in the public arena. Long considered a domestic language, the Kyrgyz language appears in political life and in particular many parliamentary deliberations are conducted in this language.

English is a language mainly present since 1992, and taught mainly at the university, but English is not very widespread, the country being located in the middle of Central Asia, and attracts internationally, especially wealthy tourists. .
