      • Australia is an island country in Oceania, located between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific in Southeast Asia. It is separated from New Zealand by the Tasman Sea and from Asia by the seas of Arafura and Timor. Its surface area is 7,741,220 km² without any land border. It also has 8,222 open sea islands within its maritime borders.

Its population is over 25 million people spread across major coastal cities such as Darwin, Cairns, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Only its capital since 1911: Canberra is more inland. Even though 70% of its territory is considered arid and semi-arid and made up of deserts, 1 million people live there in the hinterland: the Outback beyond the bush.

Uluru or Ayers Rock located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, southwest of Alice Springs is the largest monolith in the world, 348 m high, 9 km in circumference, 600 million years old, it is also the spiritual center of the Aborigines, their sacred place.
In 1788, when the first British settlers landed from English ships at Port Jackson, there were around 1 million Aborigines, but today there are only 200,000 living and maintaining their traditions.

Out of 250 Aboriginal languages and 700 dialects, only 20 survive today and are taught in schools, including Kriol or Australian Creole. The national language is Australian English, different in its accent and vocabulary.

As Australia has 3 different time zones and must take into account the change in daylight saving time applied or not depending on the city, this makes the time difference particularly complex to calculate, varying from GMT + 7 to GMT + 11.
