Ce sont les Maoris, parcourant des milliers de kilomètres sur l’immense océan Pacifique dans de petits canoës qui devinrent les premiers habitants d’Aotearoa, la Nouvelle-Zélande.
400 ans plus tard, en 1642, l’explorateur hollandais Abel Tasman aperçoit une partie de la côte et sa découverte fut nommée «Nieuw Zeeland».
Et en 1769, l’explorateur britannique, le capitaine James Cook, fut le premier Européen à débarquer en Nouvelle-Zélande et à en explorer les côtes. Il prend possession des îles au nom du roi George III.La Nouvelle-Zélande est un pays d’Océanie mesurant 268 021 km², formé de deux îles principales, dotées de paysages très variés, volcans, glaciers cohabitent, ce qui lui a valu des surnoms tels que “Paradis du Pacifique” ou “Le propre pays de Dieu”.
Le Fiordland et les Southern Lakes de l’île du Sud ont servi de décor aux célèbres films de la saga “Le Seigneur des anneaux” de Peter Jackson.
D’autres îles plus petites sont reliées à la Nouvelle-Zélande : les îles des Antipodes, les îles Auckland, les îles Bounty, les îles Campbell, les îles Chatham, etc…
Sa population est d’environ 5 millions et les langues officielles sont le Maori de Nouvelle-Zélande ainsi que l’Anglais. Sa capitale est Wellington.
